Old age and death have come to be regarded as a disease that might one day be cured, or prevented, just like cholera or typhoid. The healthists are essentially people who have not accepted the inevitability of death, and hold onto the faint hope that, if they avoid tobacco and alcohol, they might just manage to cheat death."
